What are psychometric tests? Why do employers use them?

Personality Free SHL test

SHL is a global organisation which devises psychometric tests and questionnaires to improve the match between people, work and organisations. SHL's assessment tests concentrate on matching an individual's abilities, personality, interests and motivation to the demands of the job. SHL ability tests assess a wide range of aptitudes, from verbal and numerical skills, to mechanical and spatial abilities.
Employers have highlighted a problem finding undergraduates with the 'softer' skills they require, such as personal drive, commitment, communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. SHL produces personality and motivation questionnaires that can give important clues as to a person's suitability for a particular job in terms of these traits. These questionnaires are used by employers to create a better person-job fit and to develop more effective use of their human resources.
